Nvidia displays more Ion based devices

Nvidia Ion has become a great success in a short time, and many companies are moving in to produce more and more Ion based products. Recently at Computex 2009, Nvidia displayed as much as 21 Nvidia Ion based devices from different manufacturers. All of these devices are small form factor or Desktop PCs capable of providing best visual interface and support of full HD 1080p decode acceleration.

The companies which offers the new devices includes Acer, Lenovo, MSI and Asus. Most of these devices are All-in-one systems which offers superior performance as compared to their rivals. Some of these includes Acer Revo and Lenovo Ideapad S12 which are both grabbing attention in the consumer market. Dell and HP are also expected to produce Ion powered devices by the end of this year.

Yahoo! Messenger: Prevent from Starting When Windows Starts

By default, the Yahoo! Messenger starts when Windows does. If you don’t use Yahoo! Messenger regularly, you are wasting resources by having it run when you don’t need it. To stop Yahoo! Messenger from starting when Windows does:


1. Open Yahoo! Messenger.

2. Click Messenger and select Preferences.

3. Select General from the left pane.

4. Under When I start up my computer, uncheck the Automatically start Yahoo! Messenger checkbox.

5. Click OK.

Digsby: Prevent from Starting When Windows Starts

Digsby is a multiprotocol IM client that also acts as both an email notifier and social networking tool. Since all of this functionality takes up quite a bit of memory, you are wasting resources by leaving it running when you don’t need it. If you took the default settings during the setup, Digsby starts when Windows does. To stop this from happening and shorten your system’s boot up time, follow these steps:


1. Go to the menu on the Digsby Buddy List, click Tools and select Preferences (or you can right-click the Digsby icon in the notification area on the taskbar and select Preferences or simply select the Digsby Buddy List and press Ctrl+p on your keyboard).

2. In the left pane, select General & Profile.

3. Under General Options, uncheck the Launch Digsby when this computer starts checkbox.

4. Click the Done button.

OnLive to start Cloud Gaming Service

Onlive game distribution network announced a Cloud Computing Gaming service , which will enable users to play games without the need of gaming hardware or consoles. The games can be played on Windows and Macintosh Computers or High Definition Televisions. This new venture will revolutionize the gaming world by removing the need of buying new generation consoles or updating PCs continuously in order to play new gaming titles.

The new technology uses Cloud Computing to render and compute audio and video on Super powered Cloud Servers and streaming the data to the user over a broadband connection, while maintaining real-time gaming experience.

The Cloud Servers will be able to run games available on any console or PC and will be able to deliver high performance and high graphics quality, all while needing no extra hardware other than a TV or a simple computer.

This whole is not just a fantasy theory, OnLive demonstrated the Crytek’s ‘Crisis’ running smoothly from the Cloud Servers, with only 1 mpbs internet download bandwidth for smooth gaming and 5 mbps bandwidth for HD Resolution gameplay.

Some major game developers such as Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, Take-Two Interactive, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, THQ, Epic Games, Eidos, Atari Interactive and Codemasters have already joined with OnLive to deliver this new gaming system technology.

Another benefit of Cloud gaming is massively multiplayer environments where thousands of players can join a single game and can enjoy gaming without any lag or communication problems, all while chatting and video conferencing.

The OnLive gaming system is expected to be released by the end of this year. The users will be charged monthly, but the prices are not announced yet. The gamers playing on their Windows or Macintosh computers will need no extra hardware to join, whereas the gmaers using HDTV will need to have a small Microconsole which will connect the HDTV with broadband for the connection.

Your Computer’s Performance Test

Performance Test is a PC benchmark software by PassMark. This is the best tool yet available in market to check your computer’s performance score just in few minutes. It takes only about 2-3 minutes and give you a complete picture of your computer’s performance.

Note: The results of Performance Test are accurate and very close to that of PCmark and 3Dmark, which take a lot of time to show their results.

Before you start the test (prerequisites):

Laptop:

  • Make sure that you are not running it in Power Savor mode especially using Vista. Go to Control Panel, then Power-Options and select Balance Mode, or Performance Mode or Company Recommended Mode (This is one of the common reason that Laptop gives less score while having a good Processor)
  • Make sure that the Power is plugged-in and you are not running on battery
  • Close all programs, disable extra utilities and stop any other task
  • Make sure you have latest drivers and directx installed

PC:

After download, install and run the Performance Test. You will see a complete picture of a computer components. As the performance test software started it already calculated the specifications and models of your computer. Click on any part, it will show the speed,model etc in a pop-up balloon. You can view all by taking mouse over Show All button.

Now, If you want a complete PC benchmark, then click on Run Bechmark from the left menu. Sit back and see the different cool tests it performs on your system. After the test is finished, the Performance test will give you the score of your system.

32-nm Processors around the corner

It’s been some time since we’re looking at the 45-nm processors in the market. They include Intel Penryn and Nehelum based CPUs, AMD Phenom series, Graphics Processors from Nvidia and AMD, and mobile processors which were introduced by Toshiba, Sandisk and other companies. Due to Intel’s high-k metal technology, these processors proved to be not just extremely fast, but also highly energy efficient.


But as the processing needs are ever increasing, it necessary to strain the silicon and make the process size even smaller. 32-nm process technolgy is around the corner, with some major chip manufacturers such as Intel, TSMC, Toshiba, Sandisk and IBM have already released their prototypes for the new process.

Intel recently released their roadmap for the development for the 32-nm processors. Currently, Intel is investing billions of dollars in the 32-nm chip manufacturing plants. Intel is working on “tick/tock” model of design and manufacturing upgrades. The “tock” implements a new microarchitecture design, as we saw with the current Core i7 Nehalem-based products, while the “tick” is a transition in process technology with only modest architectural changes.

The current available processors are penryn, and 32-nm Westmere are around the corner. As Westmere is in the ‘tick’ category, it will have no microarhiecture enhancements, but will only be a reduction in the process technology. Westmere will primilarility utilize the Intel’s Nahelum architecture, while giving some process improvements and better energy efficiency, all while packing nearly twice more transistors than were available with 45-nm process.

Not only the new 32-nm advancements will give performance and other benefits, it will also make Nahelum available to Mainstream and even low-end market. There will also be versions for mobile CPUs such as Clarksfiled and Arrandale. Another key advancement will be Client-Platform re-partioning for the Xeon Server processors and the introduction of Graphics Core inside the CPU for Westmere processors.

AMD although is a bit slow at development, but it has also started working on their ‘Bulldozer’ micro architecture should be available by 2010. Bulldozer is the next-generation micro-architecture and processor design developed from the ground up by AMD. It is expected that the next-generation micro-processors will offer considerably higher performance than current-generation chips. AMD Bulldozer CPUs will also feature SSE5 instruction set. The Sunnyvale, California-based microprocessor developer badly needs principally new CPU micro-architecture to recapture performance crown from Intel Corp. and win back market share.

Sandisk has also developed process for their 32-nm flash based NAND memory to produce upto 32-gigabit (Gb) 3-bits-per-cell (X3) memory chip. The breakthrough introduction is expected to quickly bring to market advanced technologies that will enable greater capacities and reduce manufacturing costs for products ranging from microSD memory cards to Solid State Drives (SSD).

The 32GB flash based cards are likely to be the last capacity bump of the microSDHC and flash memory line, which will be replaced by the next-generation SDXC (eXtended Capacity) memory cards. SDXC cards will be offered in capacities of 2 GB up to 2 TB with faster read/write speeds of up to 104 MB per second in 2009 with a road map to 300 MB per second.

Toshiba, in conjunction with IBM and NEC are developing many technologies based on 32-nm, primarily memories, and flash based NAND cards. The NAND based flash memory is used in SSDs (Solid State Drives) which are expected to decrease the prices and also lower cost due to 32-nm processes.

Certainly, with so much development going on, it’s likely that 32-nm based processors will be available by the end of 2009, maybe earlier. The new processes technology will again give a big boost to the hardware manufacturing components, and will provide twice more power and energy consumption than the current generation.
